Discovering the Charm of Wilson, North Carolina

Discovering the Charm of Wilson, North Carolina

Perhaps one of the inviting features of by North Carolina is the abundance of neighborhoods, towns, and cities that strive to maintain small, homey vibe regardless of their size or location. Wilson, NC ranks among the best with its charming downtown area, endless activities, and a prioritized sense of community. Ken Harvey Homes is excited to join this much-desired area by offering newly build homes in the “Village of Wilson’s” Bellingham community.

What makes Wilson unique? Wilson’s historic downtown area, founded in 1802, draws visitors from all over the world. With endless activities and amenities, locals enjoy year round opportunities both indoors and out without the high cost of living of the urban areas that surround it. Yet, with Raleigh, Goldsboro, and Greenville all within an hour of Wilson, a change of pace is easily accessible.

The gem in Wilson’s crown? The Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park. Put simply, a whirligig is an object that includes one spinning mechanism but you will be hard pressed to find any here that stop at one spinner. Here, whirligigs range from tiny to towering, including 30 large-scale sculptures residing in the facility’s outdoor exhibit. Typically, whirligigs are constructed via recycling using scrap metal, old fans, or even bicycle parts. Visitors often spend hours wandering the park as the wind rustles each display to life. Each November, the park hosts a celebration of Vollis Simpson’s life and work featuring live music, food vendors, and arts/crafts booths.

The hub of Wilson activity is the collection of shops, restaurants, and historical buildings found at its center. The public library houses books and artifacts related to the local history and hosts events throughout the year such as educational programs and lectures. Many of the town’s shops and eateries are locally owned which offer patrons a chance to try or buy items unique to the area. Locally made gifts are plentiful and craft beers are abundant. 217 Brews Works, Brewmasters, and Parker’s Barbecue (celebrating its 70th year!) are among the many options.

For those who prefer a more outdoorsy menu, Wilson has just as much to offer. Lake Wilson sits just a few miles from downtown and is the perfect spot to fish, boat, or swim. Wilson Botanical Gardens has numerous trails that meander through a variety of flora that draw a variety of birds and butterflies. Buckhorn Park, adjacent to the Buckhorn Reservoir, is a second multi-use area where visitors can bike, ride horses, or simply enjoy a waterfront view on its pier. Wilson residents can also reach the beautiful beaches of North Carolina in just a few hours or point west to find fresh mountain air.

Wilson is also home to the Imagination Science Museum. This hands-on museum is perfect for those who love an interactive learning experience. The Wilson Arts Center offers a wide range of arts programs including workshops and performances. Both are perfect inspiration for minds of all ages!
