Many factors make the Raleigh area the perfect place to live, but accessibility to memorable vacations may make the top of that list. For residents of Raleigh and the quaint communities that surround it, rest and relaxation are always just a short drive away. Whether road-trip plans keep you within North Carolina or take you to a neighboring state, fantastic destinations await.

Ready to put the wheels on the road? No matter your time frame, the opportunity to explore awaits.

Two-hour Treks:

  • Wilmington, NC is just two hours from Raleigh via Interstate 40. This port city combines history and beaches with endless restaurants, local artisans, and shopping. Wilmington’s historic district includes Riverwalk - a perfect place for a twilight stroll. The Battleship North Carolina is moored on the Cape Fear River ready to offer summer visitors informative tours.
  • Head west from Raleigh to Charlotte, NC, and explore Uptown, its modern city center. Charlotte is well-known as a mecca for racing fans with the NASCAR Hall of Fame and numerous team shops waiting for fan interaction. The US National Whitewater Center is also located in Charlotte and is open to those seeking a more active vacation.

Three-hour Thrills:

  • The Outer Banks' famed barrier islands sit just over three hours east of Raleigh. Pristine beaches, historic lighthouses, and wild horses highlight this rambling coastal community. A must-see is the Wright Brothers National Memorial where visitors can discover the history of flight before heading to the surf to relax.
  • Explore a neighboring state by heading northeast to Virginia Beach, VA. With miles of sandy beaches and a thriving culinary scene, seaside living appeals to all ages. Virginia’s Aquarium & Marine Science Center draws visitors from all over, often one stop in a vacation that includes local birdwatching and hiking.

Four-hour Forays:

  • Asheville, NC is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the south. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this vibrant city is known for its thriving art scene, unique dining options, and endless historic buildings. The Biltmore Estate is the largest privately-owned home in the country, with 8,000 acres of beautiful gardens and behind-the-scene tours of its 250-room castle. The mountains are a favorite for hikers, bikers, or scenic drives.
  • Charleston, SC exudes Southern charm with picturesque, cobble-stone streets and famed antebellum mansions. The historic district, plantations, and gardens beckon visitors for long strolls to soak in the area’s rich history. There are also several nearby beaches ready to kick off days of relaxation.

Five-hour Fun:

  • The nation’s capital is a must-visit destination accessible by highway or a quick train ride. Washington, DC is host to museums galore in addition to iconic sights like the White House, National Mall, and US Capitol. The Smithsonian Institution, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the National Gallery of Art are just a few of the endless cultural experiences.
  • Luray, VA, located in the Shenandoah Valley, houses a vast underground cave system with walkways, unique rock formations, and Luray Cavern’s famed Great Stalacpipe Organ. This musical wonder makes the stalactites “sing.” Nearby, tour the Car and Carriage Museum for a vintage vehicle showcase.
  • For a longer trip, head west to the North Carolina/Tennessee border and visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This is the most-visited park in the country due to its breathtaking scenery, abundant wildlife, and over 800 miles of hiking trails. The Appalachian Trail passes through the park as well!
  • Head south to Savannah, GA, and relax at Tybee Island where the Savannah River meets the Atlantic Ocean. For history buffs, walk the cobbled streets of Savannah, take in a ghost tour, or head to Fort Screven to see 19th-century concrete gun batteries. Visitors also enjoy the wide, sandy beaches surrounding the (still-functioning) 18th-century Tybee Island Light Station and Museum.

Road trips have always been a favorite memory maker and residents of the Raleigh area have the perfect launchpad to endless opportunities. Point just about any direction and find a diverse experience for each member of your traveling tribe. Ken Harvey Homes offers newly built homes in six neighborhoods in and surrounding Raleigh.
