The kitchen scullery, once a staple in lavish manors, is having a powerful resurgence in today’s modern, custom-built homes. Ken Harvey Homes is delighted to offer several floor plans that include this design option that offers a focus on function, flow, and quiet elegance.

New to the World of Sculleries?

Put simply, a scullery is a secondary kitchen space. Sculleries offer a place to prepare meals, wash dishes, and store small appliances–all out of sight. Unlike traditional or butler’s pantries, sculleries are purpose-driven with plumbing, generous counter space, and cabinets all built for frequent use. While there are variety of preferences when outfitting a scullery, the most common options include an oversized sink, plenty of space for meal prep, and hidden storage for mixers, blenders, or other small appliances. For those wanting to ramp up their scullery, additions may include secondary ovens or dishwashers, a boutique beverage station, warming drawers, or even a second refrigerator.

The Perfect Time for a Comeback!

What brought the scullery back to life? Open-concept homes provide the perfect spaces for entertainment with one downside: food prep, dirty dishes, and appliances are all in view and can be distracting. Today’s homeowners are hosting more often, and kitchens remain the hub of activity.  The scullery tucks those potential distractions out of sight, allowing the main kitchen to remain tidy while guests enjoy their visit.

Sculleries differ from traditional pantries as they are so much more than storage. Workspaces are personalized and unique design features combine flexibility with multi-use spaces.

Scullery Styles:

  • Galley: This narrow scullery often includes sliding or slim French doors and is ideal for smaller homes.
  • Walk-In: Larger homes may feature walk-in sculleries with generous countertop spaces, a variety of small appliances, and storage.
  • Backstage: This hidden scullery is accessed via pocket or hidden doors and functions much like a restaurant’s unseen kitchen. Everything is out of view!

Scullery Essentials:

  • Sensible Layout: Ken Harvey Homes places its sculleries adjacent to the main kitchen. Entry points can be through the kitchen and garage, simplifying storage access.
  • Plumbing: At minimum, a scullery should have an oversized or double sink. Some sculleries are also plumbed for beverage refrigerators, ice makers, or specialty coffee machines.
  • Appliances: A second dishwasher and second oven are great additions that will be used frequently!
  • Storage & Organization: Storage and organization should be well-thought out when designing a scullery. Choose a mixture of open shelves (dishes, serving platters, mugs) and closed cabinets (cleaning supplies, small appliances, staples).

Currently, the Ken Harvey Homes design team has three floor plans that incorporate unique sculleries:

  • The Christina offers over 3500 SF with a focus on sophistication and a design that can accommodate families of all sizes. This home is offered in Cotton Farms in Fuquay-Varina, Grandiflora in Louisburg, and Youngsville’s Glenn Meadows, Hidden Lake and Sorrell Oaks communities.
  • The Gail spans nearly 4000 SF with a modern, beautiful blend of comfort and functionality. The Gail is currently offered in Youngsville’s Glenn Meadows, Hidden Lake and Sorrell Oaks communities and Raleigh’s coveted Carriage Farms neighborhood.
  • The Glenn exemplifies luxury with over 4500 SF perfect for comfortable family living and entertaining. The Glenn is available in Raleigh’s Carriage Farms community and Youngsville’s Hidden Lake and Sorrell Oaks neighborhood.

Because the scullery is an included element in each of these sprawling floor plans, it is not necessary to “steal” its footprint from another room. While the scullery is a separate space, there is also harmony in design as cabinets, flooring, and hardware flow perfectly to it from the main kitchen. Look for additional floor plans from the design team at Ken Harvey Homes that include this fabulous, functional feature!

The scullery is more than a passing trend—it is here to stay. By featuring a scullery in select floorplans, our clients are able to gain an additional space that will quickly become a favorite part of their home. Thoughtful layout, smart storage, beautiful finishes, and sensible flow all work together to create a scullery that is both stunning and celebrated each time it's put to use.

Are you dreaming of a gorgeous, custom-built home that includes a scullery?

Let Ken Harvey Homes make it a reality!
