At Ken Harvey Homes, building has always been about more than bricks, beams, and beautiful finishes. It’s about people, community, and investing in the next generation. Ken Harvey Homes proudly participates in the Connect for Success: Students Hands-on Experience in Design (S.H.E.D.) event as part of its commitment to the future of the construction industry.
The annual S.H.E.D. competition is changing how students with an interest in construction are learning. The event pairs students with professional construction partners to build a fully, code-compliant shed in just three business days. It’s a real-world project that offers hands-on learning well beyond the walls of the classroom.
Teams include six high school students paired with local general and specialty contractors.
Professional plans are provided ahead of time, but the building process takes place in real time.
Hands-on carpentry, problem-solving, craftsmanship, and teamwork take the design plan from paper to reality.
Finally, completed projects are judged with the tops teams earning recognition and rewards.
As the construction industry continues to evolve, so does the need for skilled, passionate professionals ready to step into it. Programs like the S.H.E.D. competition play an important role in fulfilling that need by introducing students to career paths that they may not have previously considered. For many participants, this event provides a glimpse into what a future in construction could actually look like through a hands-on experience.
Ken Harvey Homes’ participation in the S.H.E.D. competition isn’t just about providing support; it’s about providing purpose. While partnering with students, the team at Ken Harvey Homes steps into the role of teacher, guide, and supporter. By bringing real-world experience to the table, Ken Harvey Homes helps students understand how precision, communication, and craftsmanship can be channeled to success.
The S.H.E.D. program is growing! While the team at Ken Harvey Homes worked with students at Bunn High School, similar events were happening across seven North Carolina counties. Continued expansion means more classrooms are being transformed into workshops, allowing more students to discover their talents. Ken Harvey Homes proudly participates in the S.H.E.D. program as it aligns with the values of the company: promoting community involvement by building relationships.
The team at Ken Harvey Homes knows that, sometimes, the most important work happens beyond the jobsite. Sometimes, its starts with a group of students ready to put their stamp on the future of the industry.
