Raleigh brings warmth, charm, and excitement to this most wonderful time of the year with numerous events that will become instant annual favorites.

  • Theatre In The Park’s A Christmas CarolDecember 6th-8th
    Now in its 51st year, this iconic play is back again, with a big change. For the first time in decades, the show will have a new actor in its starring role as Ira David Wood IV takes over the role of Scrooge from his father and executive director, Ira David Wood III. A Christmas Carol is an annual favorite for both locals and visitors–often considered the ultimate Raleigh holiday event.
  • Raleigh Little Theatre’s Cinderella: December 6th-22nd
    Celebrating its 40th year, Raleigh Little Theatre has performed its own musical adaptation of Cinderella each holiday season with a whimsical twist to the beloved fairytale. Audience participation highlights this family-friendly production–a terrific way to introduce children to live theater and cherished holiday tradition in Raleigh. This cozy, indoor event is perfect for those chilly December days.
  • Downtown Raleigh’s Illuminate Art WalkDecember 6th-January 6th Downtown Raleigh comes to light with Illuminate, a self-guided, light-based art walk. This free, five-week even transforms public spaces with a large-scale interactive installation, light-based sculptures, and projection art. 
  • Boylan Heights ArtWalk: December 8th
    The Boyland Heights ArtWalk has been drawing guests for over thirty years! Featuring more than a hundred artists and craftspeople, it is a shopper’s paradise with a wide range of glasswork, jewelry, woodwork, ceramics, photography, and more! The most unique feature of this event? Porches, yards, and sidewalks play host to vendor booths creating an unforgettable shopping experience within one of Raleigh’s most beautiful neighborhoods.
  • North Carolina Master Chorale’s Joy of the Season: December 10th
    Hailed as the area's premier choral ensemble, the North Carolina Master Chorale has been performing Joy of the Season for over two decades. What makes it so special? Nearly 200 voices, a brass ensemble, and Meymandi Concert Hall’s pipe organ blend combine to create an unbelievable performance. 
  • State Capitol Tree Lighting CeremonyDecember 12th

Join Governor Roy Cooper for the annual tree-lighting tradition on Capitol Square! Festivities will begin at 5:30 pm with luminaries, holiday music, and a special guest! Once the tree is illuminated, visitors will be welcomed inside the Capitol to enjoy its holiday decorations. 

  • Carolina Ballet’s The Nutcracker: December 12th-24th
    The Nutcracker ballet is a true holiday classic! Filled with stunning choreography, gorgeous sets, and breathtaking costumes, this ballet continues to dazzle audiences year after year. A live orchestra accompanies the story creating a mesmerizing experience for audiences of all ages. 
  • 53rd Annual Oakwood Candlelight Tour: December 14th & 15th
    Raleigh’s historic Oakwood community, dating back to the mid-1800s, transforms into a beautiful wonderland for the holidays. Homes are elegantly decorated with decor that reflects the traditions of the 19th and 20th centuries. A self-guided tour allows visitors to chat with homeowners, soak in the festive ambiance, and even peek inside several of the neighborhood’s private homes. 
  • First Night RaleighDecember 31st
    First Night Raleigh, a downtown Raleigh New Year's Eve celebration for more than 25 years, is an all-day event with more than 100 performances across 35 venues. There are endless activities for children, a giant Ferris wheel and an acorn drop as the clock strikes midnight!
